Loop detectors are used to assist boom gates to automatically operate as per vehicle movements. When any vehicle stops on the loop, the boom gate opens automatically. When the vehicle is anywhere away from the loop area, the gate remains closed.
A boom gate is made up of a pole or bar which is pivoted from a fixed point to move in a vertical direction. This bar or pole allows to block the access of any vehicle or even a person through an entry gate. Since boom barriers are most commonly used at checkpoints, they are also referred to as boom barrier gates.
The word "boom" is the Dutch word for tree. From these roots, we get the word "beam" as in a long wooden timber, and of course, a part of a sailboat, the "boom," that holds the foot of the sail and was traditionally made of wood.
